Built for a Princess

Today, I wrote about some childhood memories. One of the topics in my book suggests writing/describing your room growing up.

I loved recalling the details of my bedroom. It was so beautiful. I know that Mom and Dad created it just for me, and I always loved that room.

The door into the room had a cloisonne handle. It was white with pink floral details on the face of the porcelain knob.

Inside, the walls were pink (various shades over the years). The carpet was an awesome "spring green" short shag...definitely a statement maker.

The bank of windows provided lots of light, and a set of French doors with cloisonne handles opened up onto the back porch.

On the porch, there was a swing and from the railing, I could see Mom's rose garden, the deep, thick woods, the starlit skies, and in the summer, I could smell the Jasmine that climbed the porch pillars from below.

My bedroom set was my great-grandmother's...built in the 1920's/30's. Originally, it was a bright blue, turquoise-like color as was the dresser. I remember going to my great grandmother's house after she died and seeing this set in her home.

Mom and Dad had the pieces re-painted a thick cream with the trellis of flowers on the head and footboard painted light pinks and greens...the same for each of the drawers in the dresser. Attached to the chest was a big, curved mirror held by sweet columns on either side.

There were two small drawers at the top. I kept jewelry and odds and ends in there. The other two large drawers held some of my clothes.

Floral valances dressed my windows, and in the bathroom, I had a tall, slim window next to my sink where I could look out into the side yard. The walls were covered in a precious, petite printed wallpaper with light pink stripes running vertically and tiny, pink blooms following course.

The bathroom mirror showcased antique, cast iron sconces made of climbing roses... converted from candle holders to electric lights mounted in the mirror.

My closet was perfectly arranged with a built-in linen closet, a hamper below and 8 drawers to the side. My closet served well as a hideaway, and when I needed my space, I would go there to be alone. I liked the cozy feeling inside those walls.

Reminiscing about my room gave me pause to stop and consider how much thought, time and effort went into the creation of my bedroom. As I wrote and described it today, an intensity of "specialness" came to mind and filled me with so much joy.

Today, I talked with Mom and told her about my room description and said that it had all of the characteristics of a room built for a princess, and Mom said, "It was built for a princess."
